Solving the phase problem in surface crystallography: Indirect excitation via a bulk reflection

We show that the phases of surface reflections can be determined by simultaneously exciting a surface and a bulk reflection at grazing incidence. The interference between the surface reflections excited by the incident and the bulk-diffracted waves has been observed for the Ge(113)-(3x1) reconstructed surface.
