Application

For admission, all applicants have to demonstrate their special qualifications for the Master’s program Geomaterials and geochemistry. The Master’s program is a specialized program based on a successful Bachelor’s degree in Geosciences, ideally with a course specialization in mineralogy and crystallography. Excellent students holding a Bachelor’s degree in related fields such as the other Earth sciences, materials sciences, physics, or chemistry are also encouraged to apply to this Master´s program. The program has four major subjects (materials science, crystallography, volcanology, geochemistry), which require strong background knowledge in the subjects mineralogy, petrology, volcanology, geochemistry, crystallography and materials sciences achieved during the previous B.Sc. program. Furthermore, strong fundamentals in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology as well as initial experience with analytical methods and material syntheses are recommended.

Tuition language of the Master's program is English. English language skills in reading, writing and speaking suitable for communicating scientific topics and questions are a relevant prerequisite for this Master’s program. Furthermore, German language skills on the level A1 have to be reached by the end of the first year.

The application process depends on the individual status of the applicant. There are three different categories:

1) German citizens, applicants having passed the Abitur (German university entrance qualification), and applicants holding a German Bachelor’s degree

The application process in this category comprises two subsequent parts. In the first part, the academic background and scientific knowledge of the applicant is evaluated by an academic aptitude committee (deadline July 15th; see below). Upon passing this part, the formal application has to be submitted to the university administration (see: https://www.lmu.de/de/studium/studienangebot/alle-studienfaecher-und-studiengaenge/studiengang_4492.html).

2) Applicants from EU member states

The application process in this category comprises two parallel and independent parts. In one part, the academic background and scientific knowledge of the applicant is evaluated by an academic aptitude committee (deadline July 15th; see below). In another part, a formal application has to be submitted to the International Office of the university (deadline July 15th; see: www.lmu.de/en/study/degree-students/applications-for-admission).

3) Applicants from Non-EU states

The application process in this category comprises two parallel and independent parts. In one part, the academic background and scientific knowledge of the applicant is evaluated by an academic aptitude committee (deadline March 1st; see below). In another part, a formal application has to be submitted to the International Office of the university (deadline July 15th; see: www.lmu.de/en/study/degree-students/applications-for-admission).
